I developed Adventures of Power as a musical, taking place in a heightened reality where instead of breaking into song, people would air-drum. The songs would need to transform the protagonist from a small-town copper-miner obsessed with one kind of song - FM radio rock - to a more worldly fool able to drum along to everything from tabla duels to Algerian pop. The movie also needed a wide-screen underscore that would carry the film’s spiritual and political message. Only one composer, songwriter, and performer could bring the right combination of humor and soul: my brother Ethan Gold. Along with delivering a stunning score, Ethan created over a dozen original songs for the movie in genres both known and invented. From Mexican death metal about eating cereal, for Power’s first scary step away from the comfort of his New Mexico town, to country-hip-hop-pop-punk for the pretty-boy antagonist, to fey 80s electrofunk for the Newark trainer’s old band, Ethan made the whole thing believable, funny, and catchy all at once. This album is a parallel version of Adventures of Power, an impossibly fantastic journey that celebrates the power of music to amuse, move, and uplift the human heart.
